Dr. Colette Balmain is a specialist in East Asian cinemas and cultures and has written about Japanese horror cinema, K-dramas, and video games as well as European and US cinema and television. She completed her PhD in philosophy and film at Greenwich University, which brought together post-structuralism and feminism to offer a new framework through which to read the films of Italian horror auteur, Dario Argento.
Her current work is focused on questions of gender, sexuality, and race in popular culture, with particular reference to critical whiteness studies, audience studies, and feminist and postcolonial theory. She is the organiser of BTS: A Global Interdisciplinary Conference Project and is currently writing a book on BTS and masculinity. She is a reviewer for Gothic Studies and The Journal of Japanese and Korean Studies, amongst others.
