One night in October at 8:30 pm in India (the “infamous” 12 a.m. in Korea), when I least expected it, BTS sent us all postcards.
Three beautiful, mesmerizing, heartfelt postcards captioned “Dear ARMY” and asking ARMY to write back to them. All three postcards asked us about “happiness” — asked me about happiness.
All of their written words felt so genuine, so pure. We all could practically feel the emotions seeping through those pixels on our screens composing the scenic pictures that contained their words; the meaning of their words could be traced in the translations that were provided below.
I stared at those postcards for minutes on end and thought about what all three of the postcards asked us, asked me: about happiness.
“Dear ARMY, what are some moments that make you go, ‘I’m so happy right now’?”
“Dear ARMY, what makes you the happiest in your everyday lives, and when you’re by our side?”
“Dear ARMY, when do you feel happy in your everyday lives?”
…
When am I happiest these days? What makes me happy?
What makes me happy?
Should have been simple right? Nope.
Here too, I proceeded to stare at an empty screen for minutes on end until I realized something and answered back this:
Dear BTS,
All of you asked about happiness.
The truth is, happiness is like a tricky little bird these days. Sometimes, I find myself chasing it, but it flies out of reach; other times I don’t even notice it and it lands quietly in my lap.
Yesterday, I was happiest when a family member of mine tested negative for Covid, and today I’m happiest when we received your postcards.
Little things, big things — the bird comes and goes, flying, playing.
I’m just so glad to have my loved ones by my side through it all, and that includes you seven, too.
