R3 seeks submissions beyond the traditional academic article. We acknowledge that academic work does not exist in isolation. Likewise, we believe that the world can benefit from the sharing of stories and art. This core belief supports the three dimensions of R3:
- Academic Articles
- Creative Collections
- Supplemental Stories
Through Creative Collections and Supplemental Stories, the “academic” work of R3 is placed into conversation with the personal and community dynamics of ARMY. In this, creative work and personal voices are encouraged and valued as an integral part of knowledge-making and knowledge-sharing.
The purpose of including Creative Collections and Supplemental Stories is to establish the first international archive that traces the art, oral histories, stories, and narratives of BTS’s fans over time, borders, and experiences. These stories and art will be featured alongside academic articles and stored in a permanent collection with which members of the public can access, study, and engage. Such an archive and story exchange has great value for the public as a cultural, social, historical, and educational record.
ACADEMIC ARTICLES
The Academic Articles of R3 focus on an interdisciplinary examination of the art, fandom, economic effects, and sociocultural forces of and surrounding BTS. We recognize that BTS is composed of individuals, and thus the scope of our journal includes their works as individual artists as well as those created under the collective of BTS.
Manuscripts1 are expected to be original and meaningful contributions across all specialisations. The aim of these manuscripts should be to inform and engage all members of the public, regardless of their knowledge of BTS. These can be narrowly or broadly focused with in-depth exploration of a topic related to BTS.
Submissions in Academic Articles take two primary forms — the article and the essay. An Article is a report of theoretical or empirical investigation, original research findings, and analyses of concepts or phenomena related to BTS. An Essay is a persuasive, argumentative, open-ended descriptive, expository, or narrative essay on a specific topic.
You don’t have to be an academic to submit! R3 encourages submissions from scholars, teachers, artists, activists, and community members whose work is accessible in all media forms suitable for web-based publication and distribution.
CREATIVE COLLECTIONS
Sometimes our stories can’t be easily told through prose. Sometimes they require an object, a melody, or an image to capture an experience or thought. Sometimes, the act of creation itself is the mechanism by which a concept is developed or an emotion is processed.
The Creative Collections of R3 features art inspired by BTS and ARMY. It is an archive of records, records of your remnants. Abstract or concrete, submitted pieces can take any form — graphic, sketch, poem, short story, song, short film, statue, quilt . . . If it can’t be displayed digitally, then you may submit photographs of your work. Don’t let our list be your limit.
SUPPLEMENTAL STORIES
Our stories are important. Our stories make us who we are. Our stories make us. Telling stories is how we connect. Telling stories is how we constellate. So, we ask you . . . Will you share your story?
The Supplemental Stories of R3 houses the stories of ARMY, casual listeners, and others who decide to share their stories as they pertain to BTS and ARMY. These stories may come from experiences, triumphs and trials, connection and isolation. These stories can be as casual as listening to BTS while having a cup of tea to the emotional, social, or historical impact BTS and/or ARMY have had on you or on others. These stories should be narratives that share an experience or thoughts on an experience. For additional details, please refer to our Submission Guidelines.
1The term “manuscript” is used to refer to submissions of all media types, including written, audio, and visual. The term “creator” is used instead of “author” to be inclusive of individuals submitting multimedia content.
