When MOTS:7 was released last year and I heard “Interlude: Shadow” for the first time, I could connect it with the real concept of Shadow along with how it became the other side of the coin to my Persona. I was researching and studying about Carl Jung’s theories, and I was particularly deeply immersed in Dr. Murray Stein’s book on it called Jung’s Map of the Soul: An Introduction. While drawing this, I truly realised how profound and powerful the lyrics really were, because I could connect to it at some level.
I came to realise the Shadow and Persona sides of me through “Interlude: Shadow” and this is how I came up with this concept for my drawing. The two split sides of a person — Persona and Shadow.
One part of me is scared of rising higher than I am now, because I’m afraid of falling. But the other side of me wants to rise to the heights and to gain more fame and success through my works as an artist/fanartist. There are two sides which I have been unable to put together to make a whole piece, which is why there’s a gap between the two halves.
Hence, I created this artwork to express the chaos of emotions by portraying SUGA.
I am now beginning to understand how important both sides are to me as an artist and as a human being. The question over how the emotions of both sides of myself can be validated for me to be at peace is something that I will continue to search for throughout my life. But for a start, I was able to understand myself better through the process of creating this artwork.
