To say I’m proud is an understatement
I am constantly mesmerized
by your mind’s placement
the questions you present
considering life and death
your purpose, our purpose
whether it’s all worth it
I can’t imagine how you once felt
being hated simply for being yourself
running towards a dream that wasn’t clear
waiting for someone to say you deserve to be here
you once called yourself a monster
and blamed yourself for the hurt
maybe you were scared of yourself
and your unquenchable thirst
it’s amazing to see where you are today
hatred turned to love
you learned to rise above
and realized that you’re enough
you’ve become hope
you’ve become a way for others to cope
you’ve become the raft that keeps them afloat
you’ve become an inspiration
for almost every nation
delivering messages of liberation
you’re more than a leader
you’re more than a friend
you’re the hand that desperately needs to be lent
you’re the armor that is here to fearlessly defend
you’re the safe space where they don’t have to pretend
you’ve always been important
the difference is now you know it
you smile with such ease
and radiate such strong positivity
opening up hearts and minds with your lyrical key
connecting the world across a violet sea
even if you still struggle
and sometimes feel weak
I hope you take a deep breath
fly free
and remember
you’re exactly who you’re meant to be
Creator Statement
I have written poems about all the members of BTS but I am proudest of this one about Kim Namjoon (RM). I wrote this one night after I listened to his 2015 mixtape “RM.” I think RM writes in such a beautiful and honest way, he inspires me from both a creative writing perspective and an emotional human perspective. I am so grateful that he decides to share his art and his personal journey to self-love with the world. I ultimately wrote this poem to honor his growth and express my appreciation for who he is. Thank you for reading.
